ALT.terrain / Directions in Interactive Media
As ubiquitous computing, hi-bandwidth networks and wireless connectivity grow more pervasive, media forms and practices grow more diverse. A.I. enhanced video games, network performance events, immersive cinematic environments, audio-visual information models, interactive stage design, robotic sculpture, hypertext literature, cell-phone symphonies, internet television, GPS (global positioning system) adventure games, net art, smart clothing, intelligent architecture and synthetic ecologies are all part of the rapidly mutating hybridization of technological culture. As a whole, these new forms present a redefinition of communication structures effecting both the arts and sciences in fundamental ways.
New Mexico is at an exciting and critical juncture. The fine arts, entertainment, media, and science communities have an opportunity to define a broad range of cultural activities spanning conceptual innovation, theoretical research, technology development, media production, distribution and exhibition. To nurture a “new media industry” in a unique multi-cultural environment takes a breadth of vision. This vision requires an interdisciplinary understanding of where we are, where we have been and where we could go. An “industry” in this sense, refers to the building of a wide creative base that offers a multiplicity of goals with a potential to affect direct and indirect economic and cultural benefits to the wider community.
ALT.terrain brings together many voices from disparate disciplines engaged in the burgeoning field of interactive media to survey contemporary global practice. The participants representing regional, national and international perspectives will discuss historic precedents, established trends and new possibilities in both the fine arts and commercial entertainment fields.
